Court awards 2-yr sentence in power theft of Rs 21 lakh

Thane, Feb 25 (UNI) A district court has awarded two-year imprisonment to two people, for indulging in power theft worth Rs 20,91,770, between March, 2009 to November, 2010.

The accused were identified as Khalil Ahmed Navabali Subhedar (76), owner of Unique Engineering Works and Anis Ahmed Shafiq Ahmad Khan, who runs a plastic factory inside the premises.

According to prosecution lawyer Vivek G Kadu, the MSEB engineers inspected the shop on December 28, 2010 and found that the electronic meter had been tempered with.

According to Kadu, a foreign electronic circuit was installed in the meter, to stop recording of electricity consumption.

It was revealed that by installing the said electronic circuit, a theft of 2,18,943 units of electricity valued at Rs 20,91,770 was committed between March, 2009 to November, 2010.

A charge sheet was filed against them under Sections135 and 138 of the Electricity Act.

District Judge P P Jadhav in his order said that they have also fined the accused Rs 35,85,900 and Rs 5,97,650, respectively. In addition to this, the judge also fined the duo a sum of Rs 5,000 each.
