Congress to pitch for democracy on 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi: The Congress party on Friday stated that the democracy was in 'danger' and it is the time to "rise above parochial, sectoral and other identities which divide us by wedging differences between one another".

The statement from the party came in a meeting called to finalise the programmes for the celebration of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

"It is time for us to stand in the name of humanity against ideas of divisiveness and nefarious designs of perpetuating identity based hatred by destructive forces in order to save this nation", said KC Venugopal, AICC general secretary in-charge of organisation, in a meeting of Congress general secretaries and in-charges held at AICC headquarters.

The party also called a meeting of General Secretaries, In-charges, PCC Presidents, and CLP leaders on September 12, in Delhi, Venugopal said.

Quoting the resolution adopted by the Congress Working Committee held at Sevagram in Wardha on October 2, 2018, Venugopal said, “The CWC notes that appropriating Mahatma’s legacy may be politically expedient for some, but imbibing his principles and values in thought, word and deed is impossible for those who see in the Mahatma only electoral opportunities“.

"Today we are living in a time when Mahatma Gandhi – his actions, his values and his thoughts have become most relevant. Be it Satyagrah, Ahimsa or Rights of Poor and under privileged are all of paramount relevance and importance", he said.

"Unfortunately, what we see today is the unprecedented increase in gap between poor and rich. Congress party will ensure that this gap is bridged, that it becomes the voice of those who have been rendered voiceless due to the anti- people policies of Modi Government", Venugopal added.

He also said that "it is time to recall our resolution of last year which called upon “all countrymen and women, particularly the young, to determinedly fight the politics of fear, intimidation, lies and deception - ‘To never bend, to never stop; till we achieve our goal’.

“In keeping with this resolve and with a view to carry forward the idea, ideals and the message of Bapu, Congress party will organise massive Padyatras across the country at places which have association with Mahatma Gandhi and our freedom movement", he added.

Venugopal said that these Padyatras will be conducted under the leadership of PCC Presidents with all state leaders and workers participate with full enthusiasm, fervor and dedication.

The DCCs and BCCs will conduct various local programmes between October 2nd and 9th under the same theme.
