New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI/IBNS): Congress on Friday fielded actress-turned politician Urmila Matondkar from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra.

The decision to field the actress was taken by the Central Election Committee of the Congress.

According to a release issued by the AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, "The Central Election Committee has approved the candidature of Ms Urmila Matondkar as Congress candidate to contest ensuing general election to the Lok Sabha from Mumbai North Parliamentary constituency of Maharashtra."

Matondkar, 45, joined Congress on Mar 27.

Though she was a prominent film star in the 1990s, the actress has not been seen much in mainstream Hindi film for several years now.

She is known for her roles in films such as Rangeela, Mast and Bhoot.
