CJI Chandrachud reprimands lawyer who requested to present case before different bench for early hearing

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud Tuesday admonished a lawyer who mentioned a case for early hearing before a Supreme Court bench, media reported.

"Don't mess around with my authority," an angry CJI said, warning the lawyer who sought an early hearing of his case and asked for liberty to mention it before another bench when told the case would be listed on April 17, a report in the media said.

Reprimanding the lawyer, CJI Chandrachud, who seldom loses his cool, advised him “not to play tricks” and that the case could not be presented before another bench for a hearing at an earlier date when an SC bench was already on it.

The lawyer, however, immediately sensed the mood of the bench and expressed regret and requested to be excused for his submissions.

The CJI said he was excused but warned the lawyer not to mess with his authority.

On average, every morning the bench led by the CJI hears around 100 cases seeking urgent listing before benches in the Supreme Court.
