Madurai, July 23 (UNI): A Chinese national was arrested for possessing fake passport at Madurai airport, police said on Tuesday.

Police sources said that the Immigration officers during the routine check found the passport possessed by Zhou Hong Zhang (42) was not genuine, when he attempted to board a Sri Lanka flight.

He was detained and interrogated by the officials on suspicion.

Later, it was found that the passport possessed by him was a fake one.

Investigations revealed that Zhou came to India on business trip. His passport was impounded by Guntur police in Andhra Pradesh in a cheating case.

Though he was freed sometime ago, he could not leave India as his passport had expired.

An unidentified agent in Kolkata had arranged a fake passport for Zhou to leave India.

He was handed over to the Perungudi police, who had registered a case against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and also under the Passport Act.

Further investigations were on.
