Chennai: Gold worth Rs 31.26 lakh seized at airport, one arrested

Chennai, Apr 1 (UNI) Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs seized 954 gms of gold worth Rs 31.26 lakh in two incidents and arrested a person at the Anna International Airport here on Monday.

A Customs release said based on specific information, the AIU officers intercepted one, Mohammed Affan (40) of Bhatkal in Karnataka, who had arrived from Dubai by Air India flight on suspicion of carrying gold on person.

During his personal search, six bundles of rubbery spread wrapped with black adhesive tape was found concealed in his underwear.

After extraction by heat treatment, 690 grams of gold of 24 K purity valued at Rs 22.61 lakh was recovered.

He had gone to Dubai from Mumbai, but had arrived at Chennai for the first time.

Earlier he had departed to Dubai from Mumbai and Hyderabad airports and also returned at these airports.

The passenger was arrested.

In the other seizure, the officials intercepted one Ahmad Anas of Madurai, who had arrived from Colombo by the Sri Lankan Airlines flight and seized 264 gms of gold of 24 K purity valued at Rs 8.65 lakhs, which was concealed in his rectum.

In both cases, total 954 gms of gold valued at Rs 31.26 lakh was recovered and same was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962.

Further investigations are under progress.
