Kolkata, Jun 15 (IBNS): The Kolkata Police on Thursday quizzed Narada News CEO Mathew Samuel in an extortion case while Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)'s deputy mayor and Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker Iqbal Ahmed was interrogated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with Narada sting operation, officials said.

After starting probe into Narada sting, CBI on June 8 served notice to TMC leader Iqbal Ahmed directing him to appear before the Central investigation agency on June 10.

Later, Iqbal Ahmed sought one week time from the CBI and he along with his counsel visited CBI's office at south Kolkata's Nizam Palace on Thursday morning.

A CBI source told IBNS that Iqbal Ahmed is being quizzed by the investigators since 11 am.

Meanwhile, Narada News's CEO Mathew Samuel, who carried out the entire sting operation, is being interrogated by Kolkata Police at Muchipara Police Station since Thursday afternoon, in connection with an extortion case , according to officials.

While entering Muchipara Police Station, Mathew Samuel told reporters that he would visit city police headquarters at Lalbazar and the offices of Enforcement Directorate and CBI after getting out from Muchipara Police Station.

Meanwhile, the ED has summoned Iqbal Ahmed in connection with Narada sting money laundering case on June 21, sources said.

Since March 14 last year, news portal- Narada News- released several sting operation footage, where TMCs leaders, ministers, MPs and MLAs were seen allegedly taking bribes.

From the beginning, TMC leadership has claimed that the sting footage is doctored and is a conspiracy of the opposition party.

After getting direction from the Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court, the CBI started probing into the case.

On April 17, the investigation agency registered an FIR in connection with the case under several non-bailable sections against 12 influential leaders, cabinet ministers, MLAs and MPs of TMC and one senior IPS officer, who were allegedly seen taking bribes in the sting footage, reports said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also registered a money laundering case based on the Narada sting and the Central Economic Intelligence Agency is currently investigating the case.
