Calcutta High Court to hear pleas against one-day West Bengal panchayat poll today
Kolkata, Apr 30 (IBNS): The Calcutta High Court on Monday will hear the two opposition parties' pleas against the State Election Commission's (SEC's) decision to conduct a single phase panchayat poll in West Bengal, media reports said.
The petitions have been filed by CPI-M and Party of Democratic Socialism.
The SEC and the opposition parties are once again at loggerheads after the former announced a single date to conduct the poll that too allegedly without consulting the latter.
The High Court had ordered the SEC to consult the opposition parties before announcing the poll dates.
After the delay in the poll process due to court proceedings, the SEC announced May 14 as the new poll date.
Earlier, the SEC had announced a three-phase poll.
The opposition parties had alleged the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of hindering them from filing nominations by resorting to violence.
BJP, CPI-M and Congress even moved the High Court against the SEC for rescinding its own order of extending the nomination filing deadline by a day.
Though an extra day was provided by the SEC following the court's directive, the state witnessed the continuation of violence.
Meanwhile, the TMC has already won around 34 percentage of seats as a whole uncontested, report said.
The poll results will be out on May 17.
