BREAKING: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar dies after prolonged illness

Panaji: Goa Chief Minister and former defence minister Manohar Parrikar passed away on Sunday after battling prolonged illness. He was 63. Parrikar was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in Feb last year.

Sharing the news of his demise, Prime Minster Narendra Modi said Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader.

"A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters," the PM said.

Parrikar's heath condition had deteriorated on Saturday morning. He was hospitalised several time in past year  in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York.

Last month, he was admitted in the Goa Medical College and Hospital.

A leader of Bharatiya Janata Party he was the Chief Minister of Goa from 14 March 2017 in his last term. Previously he was the Chief Minister from 2000 to 2005 and from 2012 to 2014.

He was the Defence Minister of India from 2014 to 2017. He was a former member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. 

Manohar Parrikar was born in Mapusa, Goa. He had graduated in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) in 1978. He was the first IIT alumnus to serve as MLA of an Indian state. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 2001

His wife Medha had died in 2001. They have two sons - Utpal, who is an Electrical Engineering graduate from Michigan State University and Abhijat, who is a local businessman.
