Black Friday in J&K: Militants kill 11 security personnel in 4 attacks

| | Dec 06, 2014, at 12:25 am
Srinagar, Dec 5 (IBNS): It is indeed a black Friday for the people of Jammu and Kashmir as four coordinated terror strikes in less than 12 hours hit the northern state with 11 security personnel losing their lives in a massive encounter at an Army camp near the border area in Uri sector.
A group of heavily armed and well equipped terrorists opened a heavy volume of fire with automatic weapons at an Army Camp in Mohura in Uri district at around 3 AM on Friday. Army troops from within the Camp retaliated immediately and engaged the terrorists, the Indian Army said in a statement.

The troops from the neighbouring camps, who were already in a state of high alert, immediately mobilized their QRTs (Quick Reaction Team), rushing to the site and surrounding the area.

In the ensuing fire fight, all six foreign terrorists were eliminated by the security forces.

The encounter between the Army and the group of terrorists which commenced in the early hours lasted just over six hours. During the initial part of the operation, one terrorist opened fire on the vehicles of the QRT of the neighbouring unit rushing to the site, in which one gypsy went off the road and overturned, leading to casualties among the security forces.

The terrorist was immediately eliminated by the troops of the QRT and his body recovered. During the operation, a barrack also caught fire, presumably because of a kerosene heater toppling, in which some soldiers got trapped.

The operations continued relentlessly and by 9.30 AM, the terrorists were eliminated.

During the deliberate clearing up operations which commenced thereafter, the bodies of five more terrorists were recovered, bringing the total to six terrorists eliminated.

During the intense operations, one officer and seven soldiers of the Army, one ASI and two constable of the JKP made sacrifices.

Six AK rifles with 55 Magazines, two shotguns, 2 Night Vision Binoculars, 4 radio sets, 32 unused grenades, 1 medical kit and a large quantity of miscellaneous warlike stores were recovered from the dead terrorists.

The Army is continuing the combing operation in the surrounding areas to search out any terrorists who may still be hiding or attempting to escape.

Besides the Uri attack, three other militant attacks were reported from the state.

The fourth attack took place when a grenade was hurled near a bus stand in Tral in Pulwama district in a move to target the civilians.

One civilian has died while nine others have been injured in the attack.

Earlier in the day, a grenade attack hit J&K's Shopian Police Station.

However, no casualty was reported from the attack.

In another strike, an encounter was carried out in Soura area of Srinagar, where one militant was killed.

The three attacks on Friday seem to be coordinated ones, which come ahead of of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's poll campaign in the state

The terror strikes are now supposedly seen as an endeavour to disrupt the peaceful Assembly polls that are being held in Jammu and Kashmir.

The first two phases of polling have seen a heavy turnout. Results will be declared on December 23.

Reacting to the attacks, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh blamed Pakistan for the terror strikes.

"If Pakistan can't stop these attacks, let it take India's help," he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also condemned the attacks strongly.

"My heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the 4 attacks today. I hope @HMOIndia takes steps to plug the gaps in C I grid. It's been a terrible day - 4 attacks & a number of deaths - security forces & innocent civilians killed in the valley today," Abdullah tweeted.

"Militants have struck an army camp in North Kashmir between Baramulla & Uri. Security force casualties are feared. It's an ongoing encounter. JK Police & army are responding to the attack in Uri. Once again shows the desperate levels militants will go to to disrupt peace & normalcy," he tweeted earlier in the day.

In Delhi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said, "We have killed three of them (militants) and we will eliminate the remaining. The ones who are left are trapped."

"It is possible that this has happened because of elections," he said.

Earlier on November 27, three soldiers and five civilians were killed as a group of terrorists crossed over, opened fire at an army column on patrol and entered an unused bunker in the Arnia sector of Jammu.

Four militants were also killed in a counter firing by the army jawans.

In fact on Wednesday, a major Infiltration bid was foiled by the Army in state's Naugam area. Six heavily armed terrorists were killed.
