BJP's Tathagata Roy slams top leadership for giving Bengal poll tickets to 'politically stupid' actors

Kolkata/IBNS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal is dealing with a blame game after the party faced a humiliating defeat in the hands of Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2021 assembly elections.

Former Tripura and Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy, a member of the BJP, took to Twitter on Tuesday to slam party state president Dilip Ghosh, national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya for giving tickets to television and film stars, who according to him are "politically stupid".

In a series of tweets, Roy, who is the former state BJP president, said, "Film and TV actors who never had anything to do with politics, let alone BJP,were handed tickets by BJP’s election management team. Parno Mitra (Baranagar),Srabanti Chatterjee (Behala West),Payel Sarkar (Behala East).

"These women were so politically stupid that they had gone on a steamer trip with TMC’s playboy-politician Madan Mitra less than a month before elections and shot selfies with him. All were roundly defeated. What great qualities were these women possessed of? Kailash Vijayvargiya,Dilip Ghosh & Co must answer."

Roy also went on to say BJP's electoral tickets carry "substantial money for running the election". "It must not be forgotten that a BJP electoral ticket carries with it substantial money for running the election. Or for other purposes!"

Following the trend set by Mamata in West Bengal politics, the BJP went into polls this time by fielding a number of actors from various seats.

However, the majority of the film stars were almost decimated by the TMC as the results were declared last Sunday.

Notably, BJP candidate Hiran Chatterjee was a rare celebrity to win for the party from Kharagpur Sadar.

In a highly intense fight with the BJP, the TMC has won 213 of 292 seats (two more seats due to be polled), decimating the saffron unit which has won just 77.
