Kolkata/IBNS: Former Union Minister Babul Supriyo, who quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) last month, will resign as the Lok Sabha MP on Oct 19.

Supriyo tweeted Monday, " Sincere Gratitude to Hon'ble Speaker Sir @ombirlakota for granting me his time tmrw at 11am to formally resign as a MP•I will not hold on to the Berth/Perks/Salary of a MP now that I am no longer a part of @BJP4India that I won the seat for•If I have it in me, wil win it again."

TMC MP Derek O'Brien commented on tweet, "Good on you."

Supriyo, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2021 assembly elections in Mar-Apr as a BJP candidate from Tollygunge, was stripped of his ministry in the last cabinet reshuffle of the Modi government at the Centre.

On the same day when he lost his junior ministry, the two-term MP had announced quitting politics though he had stated he would not join any other party.

Supriyo, a singer-turned politician, won from Asansol in 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha assembly elections.
