BJP takes Jharkhand, trails behind PDP in Kashmir
Srinagar/Ranchi, Dec 23 (IBNS): India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the assembly polls in Jharkhand and is all set to form the government in the eastern state, while it is trailing behind the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir which apparently is headed for a hung assembly as counting of votes is underway in the two states that went to state polls recently.
But the performance of BJP in Kashmir is the big story of the day with the nationalist party making a big dent in the state where it had less presence.
At around 1-30 pm, in Jammu and Kashmir the BJP was leading in 26 seats, gaining about 15 seats in this election, of the total 87 seats, but the PDP emerged as the biggest winner leading in 30 seats.
The National Conference (NC) of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was trailing behind them at 14, losing about 14 seats from the last time. The Congress was leading in 12 only, which is a loss of six seats from the last time.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lost from Sonwar but he also fought from Beerwah.
Tweeting, Omar Abdullah said, "Congratulations to Ashraf Mir for his victory in Sonwar. I wish him & the people all good luck for the next 6 years. He's now my local MLA."
On the other hand, PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who could be the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, won from the Anantnag assembly constituency.
Jammu and Kashmir, where people voted in large number despite the fear of terrorists, witnessed a quadrangular contest among the National Conference, PDP, BJP and Congress. BJP has emerged as a major force in the terrorism-wracked state this time, riding on the Modi wave.
A day ahead of the Assembly Elections result declaration in Jammu and Kashmir, state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had ruled out any tie-up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its former ally Congress though after counting it is in no position to bargain.
In the 2008 Assembly Election, the ruling NC of Omar Abdullah had emerged as the largest party winning 28 seats out of 87 Assembly seats.
PDP was second with 21 seats while the Congress got third spot winning 17 seats, BJP, however, could win only 11 seats last time.
