BJP protests against Tipu Jayanti celebrations in Karnataka, former CM arrested

Bengaluru,Nov 10 (IBNS): The Karnataka government has boosted security arrangements on Thursday to prevent disruptions in law and order during the Tipu Jayanti celebrations, according to media reports.

Tipu Sultan (1750-1799) was a ruler of Mysore and fought against the then colonial rulers, the British.

But many Hindu groups and others claim that Tipu was a bigot and his birthday should not be celebrated, media reported.

The Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) said it will observe Thursday as a 'black day'.

Karnataka BJP chief and former chief minister of the state, BS Yeddyurappa and other BJP members were arrested on Thursday as they protested against the Tipu Jayanti celebrations.

Tweeted Yeddyurappa, "Arrested while protesting against Cong govt for celebrating Tippu Jayanti,Will scrap this Jayanti within 24hrs of forming BJP govt in 2018."

In an earlier tweet, he had said, "the Congress Govt celebrating Tippu Sultan Jayanti for petty appeasement politics."

The state administration has imposed prohibitory orders in many place, the media reported.

119 KSRP platoons, 9,000 Home Guards, and 7 companies of Central forces deployed across state, reported The Hindu.
