BJP leader arrested with banned notes, illegal firearms in Kolkata

Kolkata, Dec 6 (IBNS): The Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata Police on Tuesday booked a BJP leader, Manish Sharma, along with six coal mafias from city's Baguiati area and seized a huge amount of scrapped Rs 500 and 1000 old notes and unauthorized firearms from their possessions, officials said.

According to reports, the team of seven, led by BJP leader Manish Sharma and coal mafia don Rajesh Jha, came to Kolkata from Raniganj in Burdwan district of West Bengal to exchange their old banned notes.

"Several unlicenced firearms and old Rs 500/1000 and new Rs. 2000 notes worth approximately 33 lakh have been recovered from the seven arrested," an official of Kolkata Police's STF told IBNS.

Meanwhile, a credible source claimed that the recovered currencies' amount was more than 1 crore.

According to sources, held Manish Sharma participated in last Bengal assembly election as a BJP candidate.

However, they were produced in a city court on Tuesday and sent to STF custody till Dec 9.
