New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the Bihar government over the rapes of young girls in a shelter home, asking why the government did not inspect the facilities run by NGOs.

Around 34 girls in a shelter home in Bihar were sexually assaulted over a period in one of the most horrific incidents surfacing in the country in recent times.

The incident came to light after Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences submitted a report, based on conversations with several girls at the home.

The Nitish Kumar government came under fire following the revelation of the shelter home horror.

The Supreme Court said every six hours a girl in India is raped, said media reports.
