Big action in RG Kar case: Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari suspends 3 IPS officers, including ex-CP Vineet Goyal

Kolkata/IBNS: The RG Kar rape-murder case, which had sent shockwaves across the country, returned to the spotlight on Friday after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari suspended three IPS officers over their handling of the incident.

Addressing a press conference at Nabanna, Adhikari announced that IPS officers Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta would remain suspended pending a probe into their roles in handling the case.

Goyal, currently serving as the Additional Director-General (ADG) of the Special Task Force (STF), was the Kolkata Police Commissioner when the crime took place.

Gupta had served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), while Mukherjee was the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) in August 2024 when the incident occurred.

Suvendu Adhikari also alleged that two police officers had offered money to the victim’s family on behalf of the state government.

“We have heard from the victim’s mother through the media that two cops had offered money, which amounted to a kind of bribe,” the Chief Minister said, adding, “We will probe the allegations thoroughly.”

“A transparent investigation must be conducted while keeping the officers under suspension,” he added.

Adhikari said phone calls and WhatsApp chats of police officers linked to the case would be examined as the probe progresses.

He further stated that the role of any minister — or even the then Chief Minister, if required — would also come under scrutiny.

“We will ascertain whether the police officers were acting under instructions from any minister or the Chief Minister,” Adhikari said.

The Chief Minister clarified that the state government’s inquiry would remain limited to the alleged mishandling of the case for now, while the rape-murder investigation itself would continue to be handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The RG Kar case would be discussed in detail in the next cabinet meeting which will be held on Monday.

The action comes from the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised the files related to crimes against women including RG Kar case would be reopened.

The RG Kar victim's mother Ratna Debath successfully contested on a BJP ticket from Panihati in the 2026 Assembly elections.
