Bengal education scam: After Partha Chatterjee, ED now arrests TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya

Kolkata/UNI/IBNS: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Tuesday arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Manik Bhattacharya in connection with the alleged West Bengal education scam.

Bhattacharya is accused of having involvement in the alleged irregular appointment of the teaching staff in the primary section.

The MLA from Nadia's Palashipara, who was the president of West Bengal Primary Education Board, was formally arrested after about 12 hours of questioning by the ED at its CGO Complex in Salt Lake, official sources said.

Bhattacharya was grilled for 12 hours until he was arrested at 1 am Tuesday for his alleged non-cooperation with the probe officials.

This is the second arrest made by the ED in connection with the education scam that has embarrassed the ruling party of West Bengal.

Former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee, who was the high profile colleague of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was arrested in July in the SSC scam after a huge cash worth Rs. 50 crore was recovered from his aide Arpita Mukherjee's flats.

The two are still in jail.
