Jaipur, Apr 3 (IBNS): Indian Olympian Krishna Poonia, who is contesting the Lok Sabha polls for Congress from Jaipur Rural parliamentary constituency, said the contest this time will be fought to save 'democracy'.

The Rajasthan seat is seeing a clash between two Olympians, Krishna and Union Minister and Olympic silver medal winner Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.

Rathore is currently serving as the Union Sports Minister.

49-year-old Rathore is the sitting lawmaker in Jaipur Rural.

Poonia told NDTV: "Our fight is not that of athletes. This is a fight to save democracy. There is a need to take up the issues of the youth, farmers and women."

She attacked the BJP and said: "The BJP only makes promises.... When the nation's money was being looted, why were the chowkidars(watchmen) sleeping?"

Poonia, who is a legislator from  Sadulpur   assembly seat,  won the gold medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. She had also represented  India in Olympics.
