Mumbai: Mumbai Police has obtained two identity documents confirming the nationality of the actor Saif Ali Khan's alleged assailant, Sariful Islam, media reports said.

Sariful, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, reportedly entered India illegally last year, adopting the alias Bijoy Das.

Sariful was arrested on Saturday in Thane near Mumbai after a three-day operation involving 20 police teams.

He was presented in court the following day and remains in police custody.

Police officials revealed on Thursday that while they already knew Sariful was from Bangladesh, two identity cards now provide concrete evidence, reported NDTV.

The first is a Bangladeshi National Identity Card indicating that Sariful was born on March 3, 1994, and is the son of Mohammed Ruhul Islam, the report said, quoting Mumbai Police.

The second document is a learner’s driver’s licence, showing Sariful as a resident of Barisal, a city in south-central Bangladesh.

Issued in November 2019, the licence was valid until February 2020, with a scheduled test for a permanent licence on March 18, 2020.

The incident occurred in the early hours of January 16 when Sariful allegedly broke into Saif Ali Khan's residence in Bandra West’s ‘Satguru Sharan’ building, intending to commit theft.

Allegedly, he demanded Rs 1 crore from the nanny of Saif’s three-year-old son, Jehangir (Jeh).

When Saif confronted him, Sariful stabbed the actor six times before being subdued.
