Chennai/IBNS: At least six people, including a child, died as fire broke out at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu's Dindigul on Thursday night.

The incident occurred around 8 pm at City Hospital on Trichy Road.

According to preliminary reports, an electric short circuit at the hospital might have caused the blaze in the medical facility.

A detailed investigation is underway.

TV visuals showed smoke billowing from the building, as fire tenders worked for nearly two hours to douse the flames.

The six deceased were found in the lift of the building.

The remaining patients were evacuated safely and shifted to nearby hospitals, said reports.
