Guwahati, Sep 7 (IBNS): Majuli island, in Assam, which recently won the epaulette of being the world's largest river island, will be declared India's first island district on Thursday, according to media reports.

On Wednesday, the island was seen preparing in full swing for the declaration, which will be made by the state's Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, who is the elected representative of Majuli in the Assam state assembly.

On Sep 1, the 880 square km Majuli island on the Brahmaputra river displaced Marajo island of Brazil to become the world's largest river island according to Guinness World Record, media reported.

Majuli island is the seat of neo-Vaishnavite culture in Assam and is home to 30 historic Sattras, according to media reports.

Due to the frequent flooding of the Brahmaputra Majuli suffers heavy erosion. In the last 30-40 years it is estimated that it has lost around one third of its area. Majuli is home to around 160,000 people, the entry in the Guinness World Records said.
