Guwahati, Jan 10 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday said that the state government has decided to establish a state school of drama in the lines of National School of Drama in the state so that a proper training to the young artists can be provided where they would be enabled to hone their dramatic skills.

Taking part in the closing ceremony of the Assam Natya Sanmilan’s 55th Tinsukia Session at Gopinath Bordoloi Playground here as the chief guest, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the artists are the backbones of the society because they serve as the voice of conscience for the people and government is committed to protect their interests.

Stating that drama is an important art form that reflects the strengths and weaknesses of the society, Sonowal said that young generation must be inspired to take up this art and make meaningful contribution to society through it.

While handing out a cheque of Rs 3 lakh to Assam Natya Sanmilan, Chief Minister Sonowal announced that a plot of land would be allotted to Sanmilan for setting their permanent office at Guwahati which would augment the drama movement in the state in a big way.

Stating that drama as an art form has robust reach which must be utilized to send out messages of harmony and unity, Sonowal announced that the government is going to institute an award in the name of the doyen of Assamese drama Brajanath Sarma from next year to honour a personality who has contributed immensely to the field of Assamese drama.

"The state government will also install a statue of the doyen at Sarbhog in Barpeta soon," the Assam CM said.

Sonowal also said that today’s modern world demands excellence in every sphere but for achieving excellence humanity cannot be allowed to lose out.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s motto of “Sabka Sath Sabka Vikash” Sonowal said that the government is committed to inclusive growth of the society where even the poorest of the poor is uplifted through honest service delivery and compassion.

Saying that the Assam has a glowing legacy in the field of drama left behind by doyens like Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Brajanath Sarma and Phani Sarma Chief Minsiter Sonowal urged the Assam Natya Sanmilan to revitalize the drama movement in the state and to depict the future idealistic Assam to the young generation of state through their art.

Referring to Srimanta Sankardeva, the Assam CM said that he used the medium of drama to propagate his messages of unity and harmony in the society and the present day dramaticians must take inspiration from his ideals.
