Assam flood situation remains grim, death toll rises to 77
Guwahati, Jul 24 (IBNS): The Assam flood situation is still grim and floodwaters have submerged new areas in few districts following incessant rains in the past 72 hours.
With six more deaths, the toll in Assam flood has risen to 77 and still, around 35 lakh people of 20 districts are affected in the deluge.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), six persons have died due to flood in the state in past 24 hours and the death toll mounted to 77.
Three people were drowned in floodwater in Morigaon district, while one each died in Nalbari, Barpeta and Dhubri districts.
Following incessant rains in the Lower Assam districts, Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring country Bhutan, the water levels of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have again increased and are flowing above danger level marks in various places in the state.
The floodwaters have submerged several new villages in the state.
Around 35 lakh people in 20 districts are affected in the current flood.
Over 10.51 lakh people have been affected alone in Barpeta district, while 5.50 lakh people affected in Dhubri, 4.73 lakh people in Morigaon, 2.64 lakh people in Bongaigaon, 2.61 lakh people in South Salmara, 2.06 lakh people in Goalpara, 1.03 lakh people affected in Darrang district.
2933 villages and 1,43,734 hectare of croplands are still underwater.
826 relief camps and 107 Relief Distribution Centres are operational in the flood-hit districts and over 2 lakh flood-affected people have taken shelter in the camps.
On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday visited flood-hit South Salmara district and the areas along the Indo-Bangladesh border and took stock the situation.
