Assam flood: Situation improves, death toll mounts to 39

Guwahati, Jul 18 (IBNS): The flood situation in Assam has slightly improved but several lakhs of people are still living underwater in the state.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, over 53.52 lakh people of 28 districts of the state have been affected in the deluge.

As many as 39 lives have been lost due to flood and landslide in the state so far.

According to the reports, nine people were drowned in floodwaters in Biswanath, Sonitpur, Udalguri, Morigaon Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts in the past 24 hours.

4128 villages and 2,12,122 hectare of croplands are still underwater.

The floodwaters have also submerged the BSF water wing located at Gauripur in Dhubri district.

This year's flood is one of the worst deluge in Assam in the past three decades.

The administration has set up 689 relief camps and 391 Relief Distribution Centres in the flood-hit districts and 2,25,737 flood-affected people have taken shelter in the relief camps.

Over 25 lakh animals have been affected in this deluge.

On the other hand, the water level of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are receding but still flowing above danger level marks in many places in the state.

The Assam forest department, forest guards of Kaziranga National Park and many other NGOs have rescued several wild animals while the Kaziranga National Park has faced devastating flood this year and the animals are suffering majorly.

According to the reports, the forest department, park authorities, CWRC, NGOs have rescued the wild animals with the help of local people from adjoining areas of the park.

Over 95 per cent areas of the world heritage site have been submerged by the floodwaters in which the wild animals have been forced to move the neighbouring hill areas of Karbi Anglong district by crossing the Asian Highway – 1and adjoining areas of the park.

The park authorities, state forest department, CWRC have rescued 58 wild animals including two rhino calves, 50 hog deer, one elephant and they are now under treatment.

On the other hand, following the deluge, the Assam forest department has opened a helpline number (0361-2332830) and urged the people to help the park authorities, forest department to rescue the wild animals.

Assam forest department PRO Sailen Pandey said that the state forest department, park authorities, NGOs, CWRC are engaged in rescue operations to safely rescue the wild animals, who were moved outside of the park following the devastating flood.
