Assam flood: Nearly 36 lakh people affected, death toll rises to 76

Guwahati/IBNS: The current spate of flood in Assam has claimed five more lives on Friday taking the state's death toll to 76.

One each person drowned in floodwaters in Dhubri, Darrang, Bongaigaon, Goalpara and Kamrup districts.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 36 lakh people of 28 districts are still affected in the current wave of flood.

Over 8.92 lakh people are affected in Dhubri district alone followed by 4.43 lakh people in Goalpara, 4.29 lakh people in Barpeta, 4.24 lakh people in Morigaon, 2.25 lakh people in South Salmara, 1.75 lakh people in Darrang, 1.66 lakh people in Bongaigaon, 1.30 lakh people in Kamrup district.

3014 villages under 88 revenue circles are currently underwater and the floodwaters submerged over 1.28 lakh hectares of agricultural lands

51421 people are currently taking shelter at 304 relief camps in 24 districts.

On the other hand, the SDRF teams and local administration have rescued 2389 people from the flood affected areas in Dhemaji, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri and South Salmara districts on Friday.

The water level of Brahmaputra river is still flowing above danger level mark at Neamatighat in Jorhat district, Tezpur in Sonitpur district, Goalpara, Dhubri district.

80 anti-poaching camps out of 223 camps in Kaziranga National Park are still underwater and the park authority had shifted six camps due to flood and 86 wild animals including five one-horned rhinos died in the deluge.

The Kaziranga National Park authority and the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) have so far rescued 125 wild animals including two rhino calves, four tiger, 102 hog deer.
