Assam Congress suffers major setback after a former minister and Rajya Sabha MP quits

Guwahati, Aug 10  (IBNS): The Congress in Assam suffered another major setback after a former Assam minister and a Rajya Sabha member resigned from the party and is all set to join the BJP on Sunday.

According to reports, former Assam minister and senior Congress leader Gautam Roy, who is known as the powerful politician in the Barak valley, resigned from the party on Thursday.

Apart from Gautam Roy, another Rajya Sabha MP Santiuse Kujur had also resigned from the party on Saturday.

The development comes just a day after Rajya Sabha MP Bhubneswar Kalita – who was also the Chief Whip of the Congress in the Upper House had joined the saffron party in New Delhi on Friday.

Both leaders would likely to join the BJP on Sunday in Guwahati.

In his resignation letter, Gautam Roy said that, he had worked in the Indian National Congress Party over 30 years and he was very pleased to be a part of Congress party.

“For some time I have been finding it is very difficult to accept either the current functioning of the party or the direction in which it is going. So, I have decided to resign primary membership of the party and all other post I hold in the party,” Gautam Roy said in his resignation letter.

Gautam Roy said that, he will join the BJP soon.

“Under leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the developments have done much more in Barak valley compared to the previous UPA government. I have seen the changes,” Gautam Roy said.

On the other hand, Santiuse Kujur said in his resignation letter that – “I have worked in this party for more than 13 years and I have been very pleased to be a part of a leading political party for which I am thankful”.

“With regret I would like to inform you that I am tendering my resignation from the membership of the party and all other portfolios given by the Congress party with immediate effect. This is purely my personal decision,” Kujur said in his resignation letter.

It is to be mentioned that, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Sanjay Singh had also resigned from the party and joined the BJP recently.

On Aug 8, former Congress MLA Rajendra Prasad Singh had joined the saffron party.

Speculations are rife that, several more Congress stalwarts in Assam will switch to the saffron party in next week.
