Assam: 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project nears completion; power generation to begin by 2023-24 financial year

Gerukamukh/Assam: The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) is nearing completion, with power generation slated to begin by the end of the 2023-24 financial year, revealed the project developer NHPC.

The construction of the dam's top level, reaching an elevation of 210 meters, has been successfully completed across all blocks as of 29th June. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in the project's construction, as more than 90 percent of the total project works have already been finalized, reported The Arunachal Times.

The remaining work on the radial gates is scheduled to be completed after the monsoon season.

Expressing his congratulations to all the stakeholders and the entire project team, Vipin Gupta, SLP Executive Director, recognized the collaborative effort that led to this achievement.

After obtaining all the necessary statutory clearances, including forest clearance, back in October 2004, NHPC initiated the construction work in January 2005. However, the project faced a setback from December 2011 to October 2019 due to agitations and protests by local stakeholders.

Overcoming these challenges, the project obtained clearance from the National Green Tribunal, enabling the construction to recommence from October 2019.

According to the NHPC release, the construction of all major project components, including the dam, power house, and hydromechanical works, is progressing rapidly.

Once completed, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is expected to generate approximately 7,500 million units of power annually, operating at a 90 percent dependable year. This development is set to significantly contribute to the region's power supply and further strengthen the renewable energy sector.
