Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot both to contest Rajasthan polls

Jaipur, Nov 14 (IBNS): Amid reports of a rift between the two, veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot and state unit chief Sachin Pilot revealed on Wednesday that both will contest the upcoming Rajasthan assembly elections, which are scheduled to be held on December 7, media reports said.

Gehlot informed the reporters as he has been quoted by NDTV, "Both, I and Sachin Pilot will fight the Rajasthan assembly elections."

Pilot added to say as quoted by NDTV, "On Congress president Rahul Gandhi's instruction and on Gehlotji's request, I have decided to contest the assembly elections."

Rumours were gathering pace over a rift between Gehlot and Pilot as the two are perceived as potent Chief Ministerial candidates of the Congress.

The Rajasthan polls are considered to be a litmus test for both the incumbent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, the latter being predicted to win the state, ahead of the 2019 General Elections.

The Lok Sabha elections will be held in few months' time and prior to the mega face-off, both the main political parties of the country are trying to wrest power in the states, which are going to polls in November and December.

In a major boost for the Congress, BJP MP from Rajasthan, Harish Chandra Meena, joined the Congress on Wednesday.

Last month, former Union Minister and BJP veteran Jaswant Singh's son Manvendra joined the Congress.

The results of the Rajasthan polls will be declared on December 11.
