Arvind Kejriwal faces setback in Supreme Court over interim bail extension plea

New Delhi/IBNS: In a setback for the Delhi Chief Minister, the Supreme Court has refused to hear Arvind Kejriwal's plea to extend his interim bail- expiring on June 2- on an urgent basis, media reports said.

Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in the Delhi liquor policy scam, has filed a plea seeking an extension of the interim bail by 7 days on health grounds.

If not granted, Kejriwal will have to return to Delhi's Tihar Jail on June 2.

He was granted the interim bail to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections, which will conclude with its seventh and last phase on June 1.

The central investigative agency asserts that he played a central role in the scam and was directly implicated in soliciting kickbacks from liquor barons.

The Supreme Court said that Kejriwal would not be permitted to carry out his official responsibilities due to "may have a cascading effect" even if he is granted interim bail while in jail.

In his first public comments after leaving jail, Kejriwal had thanked "all the judges of the top court".
