Army refutes media reports linking recruitment of porters with border tension

Gangtok/UNI: While the Indian Army carried out routine recruitment of porters in Sikkim, some reports in the media claimed that the activity was triggered by the recent border tension at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The army has clarified that the recruitment of porters is an annual activity and nothing to do with the escalation at LAC.

"News articles are appearing in media suggesting that the Indian Army is carrying out recruitment of porters in Sikkim due to border tensions. We want to clarify that recruitment of porters is an annual activity and not connected with any border related issue," a competent Indian Army source said.

According to the sources, recruitment of porters is being carried out among people of Sikkim, Bihar and North Bengal, for which due process, including advertisement was put up months ago for the knowledge of public in the region.
