Srinagar, Dec 1 (IBNS): A former Congress sarpanch was allegedly shot dead by security forces in south Kashmir's Dooru area of Anantnag district on Thursday evening.

According to reports, Sajad Malik was killed by army in Dooru area of Anantnag after he allegedly snatched a rifle from a cop.

Sajad was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police on charges of mobilizing people and organizing stone pelting during the four-months old unrest, that started with the killing of rebel Burhan Wani.

Army, however, maintained that it has shot dead a militant in Dooru area of Anantnag in an encounter.

“Sajad was 'honest' man who belonged to a Congress family for a long time. Police accused him of stone pelting and were after him. They finally arrested him a month back,” Congress’s state chief Ghluam Ahmad Mir told IBNS.

He further said that Sajad was released on on Thursday evening by the police and was sent him home with an SPO Mashooq Ahmad.

“He left Sajad at Agnoo and returned to police station. Shortly after that, Sajad was killed by army during naka,” Mir told.

The Congress Party is seeking a judicial investigation into the “politically motivated murder.”

Meanwhile, senior police official in Srinagar told IBNS: "We have ordered an investigating and will register a case at appropriate time."
