Angry mob sets police station on fire after alleged custodial death
Nagaon (Assam): A police station in the Nagaon area of Assam was set on fire by an irate mob alleging that a man has been killed in custody, according to media reports.
Three people were injured in the incident while three others have been arrested, police said.
However, Police said the man was brought to the police station as he was found on the road at night in an inebriated state.
Cops from Batadrava Police Station had detained Safikul Islam in the Salnabari area and demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 and a duck, according to sources, reported NDTV.
The people, who attacked the police station, alleged that the police killed Safikul, a fish-seller, after he failed to pay the bribe.
His family members accused the police of killing him in custody, said the report.
In the morning when they reached the police station to meet Safikul, they were told that he was unwell and had been admitted to the hospital.
But when they reached the hospital, the family was informed that he was dead and his body was kept in the morgue.
The family, accompanied by a huge mob of local residents, went to the police station to confront the cops.
In a fit of rage, the mob vandalised the police station and set it on fire.
