AIMPLB politicising the Uniform Civil Code issue, let there be a debate : Venkiah Naidu

""People are confusing the Triple Talaq with Uniform Civil Code. The government is not in a hurry to implement Uniform Civil Code. There needs to be a debate on this and people can put forth their point of view," Union Urban Development Minister  Venkaiah Naidu said.

"Why is the Muslim Law Board talking about border security? Why make political comments on PM Modi? You want to boycott Law Commission then its your choice but don't force your view on others and dont make it political.  Boycotting debate is not democracy," he said.

Naidu said the core issue is gender justice and not political.

"Equality for all’ is our motto and it’s a common code of Consitution," he said.

The Minister's reaction came a day after the AIMPLB made public its vehement opposition to uniform civil code, saying "it is not good for India."

The Muslim body was particularly scathing in its attack against the Centre over the triple talaq system, which the Government had earlier said is not an integral part of the religion.

The AIMPLB declared that it will boycott the Law Commission's  questionnaire, sent to the public to gauge public opinion on triple talaq and other anti-women practices across religions.

Calling the Law Commission questionnaire a "fraud," the Muslim Law Board said that the law commission is acting at the behest of the Centre, which last week opposed the practice of triple talaq in the Supreme Court and said it can't be regarded as an essential part of religion.

The triple talaq provision allows a Muslim man to divorce his wife by merely pronouncing talaq thrice or saying it three times simultaneously in three sentences.
