24-yr-old rape victim asks Gujarat HC to allow her abort 27 weeks old foetus

Surat, Apr 8 (IBNS): A 24-year-old gang rape victim, who is 27 weeks into her pregnancy, has approached the Gujarat High Court seeking permission to abort her unborn child, reports said.

She has cited the reason for such a demand that her husband won't accept the child.

Going by the rules, it is illegal to abort a foetus if it's older than 20 weeks.

The High Court has reserved the order in the case.

The victim had been abducted from her home in Surat and was gangraped by seven persons for close to six months, said reports.

She managed to flee from her captors on March 14.

Of the seven accused in the case, three have been arrested so far.

Earlier, she had approached a lower court in Botad to terminate her pregnancy which was then assessed at 24 weeks.

However, the court had then rejected her plea citing Section 3 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
