24 students feared washed away in Himachal

Mandhi, June 8 (IBNS): At least 24 students from the Hyderabad city of Andhra Pradesh were feared to have been washed away in Beas river close to Himachal Pradesh's Mandi city on Sunday.

According to reports, the students visited Himachal Pradesh for an excursion trip when the mishap occurred at around 6 pm.

"In all, 38 students from VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology were on the riverbanks, clicking photographs of their summer sojourn, when the water level rose after discharge from the Larji hydel power project around 2km away," Hindustan Times reported.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted: "Shocked & saddened to learn about the 20 Hyd students missing in Himachal Pradesh.Directed AP Resident Commissioner in Delhi to take all necessary steps in providing help to victims families & speed up search operations."

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he has directed authorities to despatch a rescue team for immediate action and save the missing students.

"I am deeply pained over the tragic incident of engineering students getting drowned in a flash flood in Himachal Pradesh.I have instructed the authorities to despatch a rescue team for immediate action and save precious lives trapped in the floods," Singh tweeted.

Search operations have been launched to find out the missing students.
