Village Welfare Society promotes food and personal hygiene practices for street vendors in Kolkata

Kolkata, Oct 9 (IBNS): As a part of its social mission, Village Welfare Society (VWS) Social Service wing of the Village Group has come forward with the awareness drive to promote “Food and Personal Hygiene Practices” among Street Vendors supported by ITC and in cooperation with KMC.

Village Welfare Society has formed joint liability groups among street vendor to sensitize on adhering to proper food and hygienic practices and refurbish their stalls with proper facilities that are operational and efficient.

VWS has been organising workshops to educate street vendors about waste segregation at source and proper disposal of waste. VWS has formed over 30 Joint Liability Groups with street vendors from Russel Street, Little Russel Street, Middleton Street and Middle Row area in Kolkata. Dustbins, Hand Towels, Apron, gloves and Caps are also being provided to them.

Speaking about the initiative Kuldip Maity, Assistant Secretary – Village Welfare Society and MD & CEO, VFS said, “Village Group is dedicated to serve the society apart from financial empowerment of women of vulnerable category. Community hygiene plays an important role in good health and a clean environment. Street-food has become of significant part of urban life, but the vendors lack the basic knowledge about food hygiene. Good hygiene is one of the important barriers to many infectious diseases and with this initiative our aim is to promote proper food and personal hygiene practices among street vendors, workers, customers to make the locality clean and hygienic”.
