Tagore’s works can always be interpreted, says Bangla band singer Surojit
The Bhoomi frontman who was recently also seen acting in Bengali blockbuster Praktan tells IBNS, "I had presented all these new songs in a new gayaki, without changing the essence of a Tagore song and for this I had to unlearn my typical grooming in Rabindra Sangeet and re-arrange them in a different way."
“For that I had to change pace and presentation of a song like Amaro Porano Jaha Chay’ known to a Bengali ever since his childhood in a particular form," Surojit says.
The singer was speaking to IBNS on the eve of leaving for Birmingham to attend the 'Banga Mela' literary festival overseas where he crooned film 'Praktan's chart topper and some of the tracks of the new Rabindrasangeet album.
About his renditions, Surojit observes, “Tagore’s works have the ability to be interpreted in a new way without being sounded jarring.”
The album consists of 10 songs in total among which are Amaro Porano Jaha Chaye, Fagun Hawaye Hawaye, Je Raate Mor Duaar Guli, Amar Bela Je jaye and Ektuku Chhoya Lage to name a few.
Rabindrasangeet exponent Srabani Sen, says “hearing Surojit in full bloom as a Tagore track singer whets my urge to cut a duet album with him in this branch of music.”
Prominent Rabindra Sangeer singer Promita Mallick also says, “though I remember having sung a Tagore number with Surojit in past that happened to be just one song in a multiple-track album, together we hope to do more song recording of Tagore and bring out an album in future.”
Surojit, the chartbuster ‘Tomar Dekha nai’ singer in early 2000 says his constant experimenting with rock, pop, rap genres unconsciously helped in creating this medley of sorts but there is no ground for the Tagore scholars to find fault.

“This is our tribute to the Bard in the 75th death anniversary. Tagore. And yes I am open to criticism but hope everyone will like it. ” he says.
Surojit’s new group 'Surojit o Bondhura' produces this album, their first ever in the formidable domain of Rabindrasangeet but Surojt says he was not apprehending to be torn to shreds by classicist Tagorre fans.
