Minister reveals India’s data centre capacity exploded from 375 MW to 1,575 MW in just six years
The Indian government on Wednesday said the country's data centre capacity has increased from 375 MW in 2020 to a current capacity of about 1575 MW.
Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada informed the Rajya Sabha: "Data centres are an important & integral component of the overall Digital India Infrastructure ecosystem. The Data Centre industry in India has been growing at a steady pace."
He said, "The rapid growth of AI and high-performance computing is driving increasing demand for data centre capacity in the country."
"Data centres are located across the country majorly in areas such as Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR and Jamnagar," the Minister said.
Prasada said the Data Centre industry is now further expanding in states like Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, which are coming up as new investment destinations.
He said: "The current data centres capacity across the country is less than 1% of the current installed power capacity. As per Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of Power (MoP), the power demand of data centres is estimated to be about 17 GW up to 2031-32."
