ITC Hotels ushered in Christmas spirit at their Kolkata addresses with traditional art and objects of Bengal

Kolkata/IBNS: ITC Hotels' two properties in Kolkata – ITC Royal Bengal and ITC Sonar – ushered in the Christmas spirit this year through two spectacular artistic creations.

ITC Royal Bengal has adapted Bengal’s traditional floor art ‘alpona’ to spread the seasonal cheer through motifs associated with the celebration of Christmas.

The colourful hand-painted art stretches across the hotel’s driveway, lobby and the grand staircase.

The artistic display has been created in collaboration with heritage revivalist Mudar Patherya and his team of artists – Ratnabali Ghosh, Prasanta Sain, Lipika Mukherjee and Moutusi Ghose; artist Tapash Sarkar created the alpona-themed Christmas tree.

ITC Sonar used the leaves of the Sal (Shorea robusta) tree to create a much decorated Christmas tree, which is the centerpiece of a Christmas-themed installation art, crafted by artist Sarkar.

The decorations are made with jute and ‘gamcha’.

Both creations, part of ITC Hotels’ WelcomArt initiative – which supports indigenous art and provides a platform to local artists – are expressions of the hotels’ ethos of Responsible Luxury to help sustain the intrinsic flavour of the region.
