AI giant Anthropic faces court battle in India over its name
Bengaluru/IBNS: AI giant Anthropic’s expansion into India has hit a roadblock after a local software company filed a court complaint against it over the use of the name, TechCrunch reported.
The complaint, filed at a commercial court in Karnataka, claims that the company has been using the name 'Anthropic' since 2017.
According to the local firm, the entry of the global tech giant into the Indian market has caused confusion among customers.
Mohammad Ayyaz Mulla, founder and director of Anthropic Software, told TechCrunch, "As of now, I am exercising my legal right as it’s causing huge confusion to my customers."
The company is seeking recognition of its prior use and has also demanded $110,000 in damages.
The court has issued notices and suit summons to Anthropic, citing a January 20 court order, TechCrunch reported.
While refusing to grant an interim injunction, the court has scheduled the matter for hearing on February 16.
Meanwhile, as part of its efforts to deepen its presence in India, Anthropic last month appointed Irina Ghose as Managing Director in the country.
The AI company is set to open its first office in Bengaluru, the IT hub of South Asia.
