A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit Myanmar on Friday, with strong tremors felt in neighbouring Thailand's capital, Bangkok city, media reports said.

As per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the quake was located in Sagaing region in Myanmar.

Apart from Thailand, strong tremors were also felt in China.

The quake hit at a depth of 10 km.

The tremors of the quake were felt across Myanmar in regions like Mandalay, Kyaukse, Pyin Oo Lwin, and Shwebo.

Witnesses told Myanmar Now that parts of the historic Mandalay Palace in Mandalay were severely damaged.

Strong tremors also destroyed a bridge in Sagaing Township.

According to reports, several high-rise buildings in Mandalay were destroyed due to the earthquake.

It is feared that a large number of people might be trapped under the debris.

The casualty figure is still not clear.

Strong tremors were felt in Yangon and Naypyidaw.

A resident in Yangon told CNN: "It was excessively shaky and persisted for three to four minutes."

“The building where my house was unstable," the resident said.

As per videos going viral on social media, several passengers were seen crouching and taking cover on the tarmac at Myanmar’s Mandalay Airport.

Chaos in Bangkok

Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Thailand's capital city Bangkok, where one person reportedly died and 50 others were injured after an under-construction building collapsed in the city.

The Meteorological Department said the tremors were felt in many parts of Thailand, including Bangkok, reported the Bangkok Post.

People in the city evacuated the buildings, and several businesses announced temporary closures due to the quake.

Authorities are currently monitoring the damage caused by the tremor.

Another video that has gone viral online showed water from a swimming pool located on the top of a high-rise splashed on the nearby streets due to the impact of the tremor.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra wrote on X that she is holding an 'urgent meeting' with her officials following the quake.

Earthquakes are common in Myanmar than in Thailand.
