Magnitude 5.8 earthquake hits Melbourne, no casualty

Melbourne: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale hit near Melbourne in southern Australia on Wednesday, officials said.

No casualty has been reported so far.

Victorian State Emergency Service's (VICSES News) tweeted to inform that the epicentre of the quake was  Mansfield in Victoria.

Some viral videos on social media showed buildings in Melbourne were damaged due to the quake.

The Australian government had originally registered the earthquake at 6 magnitude but later downgraded it to 5.8.

The earthquake was felt at around 09:15 local time (23:15 GMT).

The earthquake was followed by two aftershocks of 4.0 and 3.1 magnitude. 

About five million stay in Melbourne city.

The city is currently in lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic.
