Kolkata hospital provides free health check-up for underprivileged Tribal Girls Football team from Jhargram

The hospital also organised an informative session on Sports Medicine for these underprivileged girls, most of whom don’t have access to basic amenities and treatment back home.

 

A total of 18 girls were put through basic blood tests, thyroid test and ultra sound tests as part of the health check-up programme devised for them. 

 

They also attended an enriching session conducted by Dr Abheek Kar, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and Specialist in Sports Medicine, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals. 

 

The session focused on the treatment required by athletes and other physically active individuals. This included both injuries such as muscle, ligament, tendon and bone problems as well as chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance such as asthma and diabetes.

 

The team has won the Under-17 State Champions of West Bengal in August 2014 and has also represented the Under-17 girls’ team nationally in the prestigious Subroto Cup Football Tournament, the international school football tournament organised by the Indian Air Force among many other accolades.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rupali Basu,President & CEO-Eastern Region, Apollo Hospitals Group, India, said, “We at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals have always strived to serve not only our patients but the society at large. Through the check-up and workshop organised by our hospital today, we are trying to extend our support in whatever little way possible for these young and talented girls. In spite of being so gifted, these girls do not have elementary treatment and medication because their families belong to low income groups. This initiative is aimed at educating them about the medical conditions that regular exercisers or sports persons encounter and its subsequent treatment.”

 

Saugat Mukherjee, Regional Director, CII Eastern Region, said, “As part of its several development initiatives is working closely with the state government and corporates alike to promote a sustainable and inclusive growth model. Special attention is being given to the backward districts. CII has also been working at the Paschim Medinipur district with the district administration since 2013. We are imparting Skill Development Training to the marginalized youths living in Paschim Medinipur and training workers of model Anganwadi centres in the district”. 

 

“Today, we are extremely happy the tribal girl’s footballers from Jhargram have undergone a thorough health check-up and also attended an awareness session on sports medicine. This I believe will create a new-found confidence and enable them to take on tougher challenges,” Mukherjee added.
