Kashmir valley braces for snowfall as minimum temp drops further

Srinagar: Kashmir valley is bracing for snowfall after MeT Office’s forecast of moderate to light snowfall at many places in higher reaches and plains of the region on Sunday.

Moderate Snowfall is very likely at many places over higher reaches while light snow is possible in the plains of Kashmir from Sunday evening with main activity tonight, the MeT office said.

Light Snowfall (rain in plains of Jammu) is likely at many places of J&K on January 9 while the sky will generally remain cloudy on January 10-11, the weatherman said.

It said on January 12-13 widespread moderate snowfall/(rain in the plains of Jammu) with heavy snowfall over higher reaches( >75% chance).

The MeT office has also issued an advisory stating that the snowfall is very likely to affect surface transportation during 8 (night-9th) (60% chance) and air transportation during Januray 12-13 (60-70% chance).

The night temperature in most places of Kashmir valley is likely to drop further on Sunday with a cloudy sky.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, had a low of minus 0.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday against the minus 1.4 degrees Celsius the previous night.

It was 1.8 degrees above normal during this period of the season.

The tourist hot spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 1.4 degree Celsius against minus 2.8 degree Celsius a day ago.

It was 5.6 degrees above normal during this period of the season for the valley of shepherds.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday against minus 2.6 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night. It was 4.4 degrees above normal for the valley of meadows.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius while Kokernag recorded a low of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara recorded a low of minus 0.4 degree Celsius against the minus 2.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the MeT office said.
