Bengaluru/IBNS: Karnataka reported a record 39,047 fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total caseload to 14.39 lakh, the state health department said on Wednesday.

Bengaluru alone accounted for 22, 596 of the total number of cases with an overwhelming health structure.

Karnataka now has over three lakh active cases of which two lakh are in Bengaluru alone.

The Karnataka High Court has called the situation in Bengaluru "alarming" as the number of beds available to coronavirus patients was not adequate to the demand.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa appealed to the people to abide by the restrictions to break the chain of infections.

The two-week lockdown to contain the Coronavirus surge across Karnataka began on Tuesday night at 2100 hrs and will be in force till 0600 hrs on May 12.

“The 14-day lockdown has come into effect from Tuesday night and will continue till May 12 morning to break the chain of Covid transmission across the state and reduce the number of Covid cases,” an official said here.

As per the stringent guidelines issued in an order by Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar on Monday, the lockdown will force people to stay home, as public transport, including buses, taxis, autos and private vehicles will not be allowed to operate over the next two weeks except for 4 hours during the day.
