India reports spike in COVID-19 cases amid unlock
New Delhi/IBNS: Amid the ongoing process of unlocking socio-economic activities in various states and union territories, India on Thursday reported a spike in COVID-19 cases adding over 45,000 new infections, two thousand more than a day ago.
In 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday mornings, the country reported 45,892 while the daily toll went up to 817.
The active caseload surged and settled at 4,60,704 as 44,291 COVID-19 patients, over thousand more than the new infections, recovered in the last 24 hours.
The country has so far administered 36.48 crore anti-COVID-19 vaccine doses including 33,81,671 ones in the last 24 hours nationwide, in a step to control the pandemic.
Equitable distribution of equipment and medicines to fight COVID-19 is the only way out of the global crisis, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday, in remarks to a meeting of the advisory group making the case for investing in these tools.
Briefing the ACT Accelerator Facilitation Council, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that although countries have made progress in controlling the pandemic, it remains in a very dangerous phase.
“Our only way out is to support countries in the equitable distribution of PPE (personal protective equipment), tests, treatments and vaccines. It is not rocket science, nor charity. It is smart public health and in everyone’s best interest,” he said.
