New Delhi/IBNS: India recorded less than 2 lakh Covid-19 cases for the third consecutive day with 1.65 lakh fresh infections in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

The new infections have taken the overall case count to 2.78 crore.

The positivity rate remained below 10 per cent for sixth straight day amid battle against second wave.

India registered more than 2.7 lakh (2,76,309) Covid-19 recoveries in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet last evening said that the government will provide support to children who have lost their parents to Covid.

Free education will be provided to them and they will get help in seeking higher education loans, an official statement read.

"It is our duty, as a society, to care for our children and instil hope for a bright future," the Prime Minister said.

Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have also announced relief measures for such children.

So far, over 21 crore doses have been administered across the country since the vaccination drive was launched in January this year.
