Himachal Pradesh landslide tragedy: 18 dead as bus buried under debris in Bilaspur

At least 18 people were killed after a private bus was buried under debris following a massive landslide in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh late Tuesday evening.

According to officials, the bus, carrying around 30 passengers, was traveling from Rohtak in Haryana to Ghumarwin, near Bilaspur, when it was caught in a landslide in the Jhandutta assembly segment.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the tragedy and said that rescue operations are underway on a war footing.

“In this massive landslide, tragic news has come of 10 people losing their lives after a private bus was caught in it, and there is apprehension that several others may be trapped under the debris,” the Chief Minister posted on X.

He added that all available machinery and personnel have been deployed, and he is in constant touch with the local administration to monitor rescue efforts.

The landslide was triggered by intense rainfall in the region, which has been experiencing continuous downpours over the past few days, increasing the risk of slope collapses.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and fire services are engaged in clearing debris and searching for survivors, while local residents have joined rescue efforts with excavators and tractors.

Officials said the exact number of people missing or trapped will be confirmed once the debris is fully cleared.
