Athens, May 13 (Xinhua/UNI) An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit southwestern Greece off the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea on Monday, the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens announced.

The tremor's epicenter was located at a depth of 5 kilometers in the sea area about 19 kilometers off the town of Amaliada in the Peloponnese peninsula, according to Greek seismologists.

Earlier the Euro Mediterranean Seismological Center had given a preliminary estimation of 5.1 on the Richter scale.

No injuries or major material damages have been reported by local authorities, according to Greek national news agency AMNA.

The area is seismic prone. In October 2018 a quake of 6.4 on the Richter scale had jolted the region without causing casualties.
